Governments are blaming Greenpeace. Greenpeace is blaming Sea Shepherd. And Sea Shepherd, for its part, is laying it at the feet (so to speak) of the whales themselves, and claiming it as a victory, of sorts, for cetacean ingenuity.
The Japanese, of course, are furious. Four ships of the whaling fleet sunk, dozens of fearless whale researchers drowned or missing in the ice-cold, unforgiving waters of the Southern Ocean. And the captain of the Nisshin Maru is demanding to know just who’s behind the sudden manifestation of whales equipped with suicide vests.
